Below you will find a variety of volunteer and community service opportunities available to NHS members throughout the year.
Unless otherwise noted, these opportunities are not sponsored, organized, or supervised by our NHS chapter or by TERRA Environmental Research Institute. However, each opportunity listed on this page has been reviewed and approved by the NHS Adviser as an appropriate activity for which members may earn NHS service credit.
Members are responsible for reviewing all event details, eligibility requirements, costs, transportation needs, and registration information before participating.
As always, remember that when participating in community service, you represent yourself, TERRA, and the National Honor Society. Members are expected to demonstrate the character, responsibility, professionalism, and service-minded attitude expected of NHS members.
To receive NHS service credit, you must complete the opportunity as described and submit the required service verification/documentation within ten days of each event.

Join Biscayne National Institute this Saturday August 8th for their monthly Snorkeling Debris Cleanup at Biscayne National Park

Biscayne National Park Institute will be leaving from Dante Fascell Visitor Center in Homestead, FL for a snorkeling debris cleanup within Biscayne Bay waters!

This is a great digital opportunity that allows students to help out the Smithsonian museum transcribe papers. Students have to read through a lesson that shows them how to do it and then they can start transcribing. Once they make an account they can choose a project that they would love to work on.

This is another great digital opportunity that allows students to help out with numerous research projects. Students have to create an account, then find a project that they would like to work on. In these projects they have to analyze pictures and point out what they see.

This is a volunteer opportunity to help pack for the earthquakes in Venezuela and Colombia. Students have to register and there are various dates and times.

Great volunteer opportunity where students can help with wildlife research and conservation. Students attend a training session, then can participate in horseshoe crab surveys by collecting data on nesting activity. Students must be at least 16 years old to participate in surveys.

This is a fun service opportunity where students can help DERM with their tree-planting events throughout the school year. Volunteers help move and organize the small trees while assisting with the event. Students can earn community service hours and may even receive a free tree at the end. They can also donate the tree to their school for additional community service hours.
