Below you will find a variety of volunteer and community service opportunities available to NHS members throughout the year.
Unless otherwise noted, these opportunities are not sponsored, organized, or supervised by our NHS chapter or by TERRA Environmental Research Institute. However, each opportunity listed on this page has been reviewed and approved by the NHS Adviser as an appropriate activity for which members may earn NHS service credit.
Members are responsible for reviewing all event details, eligibility requirements, costs, transportation needs, and registration information before participating.
As always, remember that when participating in community service, you represent yourself, TERRA, and the National Honor Society. Members are expected to demonstrate the character, responsibility, professionalism, and service-minded attitude expected of NHS members.
To receive NHS service credit, you must complete the opportunity as described and submit the required service verification/documentation within ten days of each event. (On our Google Classroom)

- Smithsonian Transcription Center
This is a great digital opportunity that allows students to help out the Smithsonian museum transcribe papers. Students have to read through a lesson that shows them how to do it and then they can start transcribing. Once they make an account they can choose a project that they would love to work on.

2. Zooniverse Projects
This is another great digital opportunity that allows students to help out with numerous research projects. Students have to create an account, then find a project that they would like to work on. In these projects they have to analyze pictures and point out what they see.

3. Global Empowerment Mission
This is a volunteer opportunity to help pack for the earthquakes in Venezuela and Colombia. Students have to register and there are various dates and times.

5. Florida Horseshoe Crab Watch
Great volunteer opportunity where students can help with wildlife research and conservation. Students attend a training session, then can participate in horseshoe crab surveys by collecting data on nesting activity. Students must be at least 16 years old to participate in surveys.

6. Miami-Dade County’s Adopt-a-Tree Volunteer
This is a fun service opportunity where students can help DERM with their tree-planting events throughout the school year. Volunteers help move and organize the small trees while assisting with the event. Students can earn community service hours and may even receive a free tree at the end. They can also donate the tree to their school for additional community service hours.

- Habitat Restoration (October 3rd)
Events
This is a great environmental service oppurtunity where students can help restore local habitats by removing invasive plants and caring for native ecosystems. Volunteers will work outdoors while helping protect Miami’s natural environment. Students can earn community service hours while making a positive impact in the community.

2. Kayak Cleanup & Bird Monitoring (October 4th)
Events
This is a fun outdoor service oppurtunity where students cna help clean local waterways around Key Biscayne while also learning about and monitoring local birds. Volunteers will work together to remove marine debris and help protect South Florida’s environment. Students can earn community service hours while enjoying a hands-on experience.

3. Deering Estate Communtiy Action Day (October 10th)

This is a hands-on service oppurtunity where students can help maintain and restore the Deering Estate. Volunteers assist with planting, removing invasive plants, mulching, and cleaning up litter around the property. Students can earn community service hours while helping preserve an important part of Miami-Dade’s natural environment. Volunteers must be 15 years or older.

4. Coastal Cleanup (October 24th)

This is a community service oppurtunity where students can help clean up Matheson Hammock and protect South Florida’s coastal environment. Volunteers will collect litter and other debris while working with other communtiy members. Students can earn community service hours while helping keep Miami’s natural spaces clean.

5. Trash or Treat Cleanup (October 25th)
Events
This is a fun Halloween-themed service oppurtunity where students can help clean up Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. Volunteers will work together to collect trash and protect the beach and surronding environment. Students can earn community service hours while participating in a fun community event.

7. Love for Kicks & Kids
This is a fun service oppurtunity where high school students can help children with special needs through a free soccer program. Volunteers will assist with soccer activities and work one-on-one with children while earning community service hours.

8. Baynanza 2027
Baynanza 2027, a countywide community cleanup celebrating 45 years of protecting Biscayne Bay, is scheduled for Saturday, April 10, 2027. Organized by Miami-Dade County’s Environmental Resources Management, the event invites volunteers and sponsors to join efforts in keeping local waterways, parks, and natural areas clean and healthy. The promotional poster features coastal wildlife illustrations, including a manatee, birds, and fish, alongside the official 45th-anniversary logo and directs participants to miamidade.gov/baynanza for more information.

9. GENCLEO’s “Train the Trainer”
Join GENCLEO’s “Train the Trainer” Program with Sprouts Club on October 15th and 22nd in Room 3202! Students will learn how to present environmental justice topics and then educate local middle and high school students. Participants will earn volunteer hours, a presentation certification, and 1 NHS service point for participating. This is a great opportunity to build leadership skills while making a difference!

10. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk
Join our NHS Chapter for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on Saturday, October 24, at LoanDepot Park West Plaza in Miami! Check-in begins at 7:00 AM, and the walk starts at 9:00 AM. Help raise funds for lifesaving breast cancer research, honor survivors, and support those affected by breast cancer. NHS students who participate will receive 1 service point!
